Come and see Bury town centre in a whole new light from 6pm until late on Saturday 20 October.

Venues across the town will open their doors and invite you to enjoy a wonderful mix of arts, music, performance, workshops, tours and much more.  There will be plenty to entertain explorers of all ages and interests.

Getting to Bury Light Night

Buses or trams are a great way to get to Bury Light Night.  You’ll have no problems parking and there are direct services to Bury from most surrounding areas and further afield. Visit the Transport for Greater Manchester website www.tfgm.com to find out which is the best service for you.  Here you will find information about fares and a journey planner for all public transport in the region. Alternatively, phone Traveline on 0871 200 22033 (calls cost 10p per minute plus network extras).

The Bury Light Night programme of events is being supported by:  The Rock Retail and Leisure; Mill Gate Shopping Centre; The Met Arts Centre, East Lancashire Railway, Manchester Airport, Visit Blackpool and Pennine Telecom.

At Kay Gardens:  Fire show | 7pm to 9.30pm (performances at 7pm, 8pm and 9pm) | Free of charge

FlameOz, the UK’s award-winning, world-travelled fire dance show will combine dance, balance and fire manipulation in a show that will leave you awe-struck.

At alongside Kay Gardens:  Open air market shopping | 5pm to 11pm

At Bury Transport Museum (car park and Castlecroft goods warehouse):  Light and sound | 6pm to 10pm | Free of charge

A display of light and sound by a trio of emerging, international artists handpicked from the award-winning Noisefestival.com.

On board the Blackpool Illuminations laser bus, the show combines visual elements by artist Zikra Baloch, poetry by artist Yusra Warsama and music by Andy Chandler. The trip will take the audience on a colourful journey into the rich history of Bury Transport Museum.

At East Lancashire Railway (Bolton Street, Bury):  Performance carriages | 8pm to 9pm and 9pm to 10pm | Free of charge

Come down to the platform to see a collection of colourful light festoons from Blackpool Illuminations. Then get on board the ELR performance carriages for a live performance from The Rocket, a fun loving and friendly young three-piece band from Bury. Influences range from Cage the Elephant and Queens of the Stone Age to The Fratellis and Daft Punk.  Also from 9pm, Thugs on Wolves.

At Castle Square, outside the Castle Armoury | The Sphere | 6pm onwards | Free of charge

Not to be missed – come and view the “Sphere” suspended above the Castle remains.  A 12 feet diameter sphere of moonlight will descend outside Castle Armoury and glow over the remains of Bury Castle. The sculpture’s appearance ‘phases’ in both brightness and form, alternating between the perception of a sphere and a disc. The mesmerizing luminosity and appearance of ‘infinity’ is achieved by three light rings hidden by a lip and following the circumference of the interior.

First created by the artist Patrick Beveridge and exhibited in a different material twelve years ago, SPHERE was re-imagined and re-engineered by the architectural design studio Matteblak, and DuPont™ Corian®.   The “Sphere” is presented at Bury Light Night by Bury Art Museum and the Paul Brady Studio.

At The Blind Tiger (16-18 Bolton Street):   Acoustic Glow | 6pm til late

Acoustic Glow will feature glow in the dark lasers and smoke.  Visitors will be welcomed by an acoustic set played by Sarah Dixon a young singer and songwriter from Bury.  Influences and comparisons range from Tracey Chapman to Sara Bareillies. Also glow in the dark lasers and smoke.

At Castle Leisure Centre (Bolton Street):  Zumba street party |7pm to 8pm | Free of charge

Get yourself into the Latino groove and dance away to infectious Zumba beats. Register on the night and join the party – lets make it a big one!  Children must be accompanied by an adult.

At Broad Street:  Northern Lights Club | 7pm to 11.30pm | Free of charge

Meander into Broad Street for live music and performances throughout the evening. Performing are Damien Heakin Band, Dr Butlers Hatstands Medicine Band, Kirsty Almeida and the Troubadours and Baked a la ska.

At MySensability (Back Market Street):  Sensory and Sensability | 6pm onwards | Free of charge

Visit the multi-sensory room to experience BiTjAM’s unique and interactive audio visual piece. BiTjAM are a creative technology company with developed knowledge and skills in digital engagement using creative technologies.  For more information visitwww.mysensability.co.uk or phone 0161 637 0069.

At Library Gardens (Silver Street):  Walk the Plank Fire Garden | 6pm to 9pm | Free of charge

Walk the Plank, a creative force of artists, theatre makers, pyotechnicians and event engineers, present a sculptural landscape of flame and foliage with fire-breathing begonias and flaming blossoms. Come and explore your way through a wonder to behold – trees that crackle and blaze, flaming bulrushes and glowing lilies.

At Bury Library (Manchester Road):  Make a Wish | 6pm to 10pm (last entry 9.30pm) | Free of charge

Drop in at Bury Library to make your wish and set it free at the library.  Glow in the dark crafts, sparkly stories,songs and rhymes.

At Moss Street (opposite Bury Art Musem):  Open air market shopping | 5pm to 11pm

Bury Light Night specialist markets with tasty treats and original handmade arts.  The stalls in this area are Lullabelles and Big Kahuna Caterers.

At Bury Art Museum (Moss Street):  A Night in the Museum | 2pm to 3.30pm and 6pm to 10pm (last entry 9.30pm) | Free of charge

During the afternoon call in and make your very own lantern to help decorate Our Art Museum throughout the evening. Don’t miss the evening programme which includes a Victorian magic lantern show, costume life drawing and printing and the chance to view the Polari projection. Whilst you are here, browse the unique gallery shop and indulge yourself with scrumptious treats provided by Ickle Cakes.

At Bury Art Museum (Moss Street):  Polari Mission Projection | 6pm to 10pm | Free of charge

“Bona to vada your dolly old ekes”. Polari, once hidden within the walls of illegal, underground bars of the 1950’s, now lines the walls of Bury Art Museum projecting a once secretive language out to the passing public. Offering a series of visual clues the walls speak this bold and sometimes perplexing tongue but leave it up to the viewer to decode their possible meanings. Inviting curiosity this series of projected works by artists Joseph Richardson and Jez Dolan mark the launch of a mission to save one of the world’s most endangered languages and most creative parts of Gay history.

At Bury Tourist Information Centre (Fusilier Museum, Moss Street):  Northern bites | 5pm to 9pm | Free of charge

Call in and sample some truly northern fare at Bury TIC. Lancashire delicacies such as Lancashire Sauce, Fitzpatrick’s tonic wines and famous Bury black pudding will be on the menu. The centre will be open to visitors from 10am onwards. Tasting from 5pm.

At The Fusilier Museum (Moss Street):  A free night at the museum | 6pm to 10pm

Come face to face with heroes of the past at the award winning Fusilier Museum this Bury Light Night!  For one night only we are offering free entry to the museum and a chance to take a behind the scenes look at our regimental headquarters. Wander through Gallipoli Garden for a spot of star gazing and to hear a story – a truly magical experience.

At Mill Gate indoor shopping centre:  Bury FC Speedball Extravaganza and Light Night Art Trail | 6pm to 9pm | Free of charge

Robbie The Bobbie and the Community Team will be bringing the Speedball challenge to the Mill Gate to let everyone know about all the fun activities that the Trust delivers right across the borough! Come along and join the fun, take a shot in the Speedball and try to win a great prize!

  • “Out Like a Light” by Vincent James:  Out Like a Light is a stop-motion animation with a cast of ordinary objects which attempts to shine a light on their extraordinary behaviour.  Vincent James makes artwork using objects appropriated from cartoons, in which props dislocated from different animated worlds collide, creating surreal and whimsical interactions.
  • “Lamp lighters” by Sam Mcloughlin and Alison Cooper:  Lamp Lighters explores the characteristics of this ubiquitous object and presents it in new and engaging ways. Using a variety of media and techniques, the space will be a celebration of the humble street lamp, its quirks, nuances and history.
  • “Bright Lights” by Dawn Cretney:  A creation that explores that which brightens people’s life. Come along to participate, exchange, view and reflect on this work created using paper, objects and light.
  • “Shiners” by Stephen Nuttall:  An illustrative exhibition with a twist capturing the character of Bury’s famous sons and daughters using light and quotes. Come along and join the drawing workshop.
  • “No place like home” by Tom Bevan:  A beautiful paper and light installation depicting a northern street. Come along and view the who live in these houses and witness the safety of the guiding light to home. Come along and contribute by creating your own house.
  • “Knitted lanterns” by Learn to Knit Bury:  Come and view their knitted lanterns completely made of yarn.
  • Real-time tweets from A & E:  Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust will be tweeting about every case presented at Fairfield Hospital A & E. Come and get an insight into the range of admissions to this busy department. Tweets will be projected for all to see.

At The Met Theatre | Market Street | 6pm to 9pm

Local live acts lead an evening of music and performance in The Met’s intimate studio space. Come and enjoy a sample of one of the country’s leading music and arts venues.

At Market Place:  All the fun of the fair | 12noon to 10pm

Younger Light Night explorers are invited to roll-up and hook a duck at this traditional fun fair.

At Bury Parish Church Gardens:  Hilarious encounters | 6pm to 10pm

Enjoy a hilarious encounter with the performers from Custard Storm as they wow the crowds with acrobatic antics on light bikes and stilts. Make a lantern and put it in the fire garden, sparkle on the night with your very own glitter tattoo.

At Bury Parish Church Hall:  A Rite Lite Night from Pete the bus driving poet | 7pm to 8.30pm | Free of charge

Come along and let us paint pictures for you with our words. Pete Slater and the word creatives will be performing word magic for your delight. Treat yourself to a culture transplant, it’s completely painless and you might just be pleasantly surprised.

Experience live music in a truly magical space. John findon and a variety of bands and performers.

At Lions Gardens, Crompton Street:  Live performances  | 7.30pm to 8.30pm | Free of charge

See Lions Gardens transformed into a truly magical performance space for some truly magical performances. Set to a backdrop of lighting from Blackpool Illuminations we have:

  • Bloco Ashe Samba band and the Kasbah Dance Company.
  • The Jack Tinker Quintet (a young Manchester-based jazz ensemble originating from the Royal Northern College of Music). The group blend funk, reggae, contemporary electronic styles and simple rhythmic jazz with a more modern approach to melody and direction. On Light Night the Quintet will be playing standards from the Miles Davis era of the 50’s alongside contemporary compositions with a more modern and urban orientation.
  • “Let Off Steam” choreographed by Ruth Jones. This is a unique choreography all about Bury addressing Bury “old” and “new”. Performed by mature but captivating performers.

6pm onwards – The Laughing Garden

Bringing Light and laughter to Bury folk with a positively glowing, colourful, recycled garden which promises to make you smile and lift any low Autumnal spirits. Sparkling neon lights, glowing flowers, chimes, twinkles and wonderful fragrances. This is a special Light Night sensory garden and all is not what it seems!

6pm to 10.30pm – “Congregation” by KMA

“Congregation” is an ambitious work that aims to push the possibilities of large scale interactive work into new emotional and narrative territory. This interactive kinetic light installation will illuminate your responses and connect them with the audience and performers – don’t forget to jeep your eye on the central figure!

7pm to 7.30pm Fuse Dance

Under the guidance of choreographer Ruth Jones, Fuse Dance will perform a uniquely structured, improvised dance work.

7.30pm, 8.30pm, 9.30pm and 10.30pm | Laughter yoga with the Laughing Budha

St John’s garden will be filled with laughter as our Laughing Buddha leads us all in Laughter yoga and contagious hilarity. Join us at the happiest garden in town and see if you can find the wishing tree.

9pm onwards – Bury Hospice Light Night Walk | £5.00

Join Bury Hospice on their 6 mile Light Night Walk around animated Bury.  Everyone welcome.

At AWF Bowling, The Rock:  Glow Night spectacular | 7pm to 1am

Fancy a glow in the dark bowling session set to music with special fun and games running alongside. Book now to avoid disappointment (special offers available).

At the Rock Retail and Leisure:  Around Every Corner and Light Night Extravaganza | 6pm onwards | Free of charge

Be prepared to discover creative installations and inspirations all over Bury town centre this evening. Surprises in tore include: Blackpool Illuminations; magical  inflatables from the Space Cadets; lights, projects and fire displays from Walk the Plank; and entertainment by Custard Storm. Interactive experiences promised all around!

Barista restaurant and bar, Upper Rock:  An evening of live music | 6pm to 11pm

Roof-top dancing flames and live music from ‘Colour Blue’.  Sit back, relax and watch the sky light up.  Fresh food and beverages available until 9.30pm.
